Portrait Photo Session Tips

Lets Have Some Fun.
A good expression on every face is the very heart of the family portrait. Organize everything the day before your session so that your family members do not feel harried and hassled. Don’t force anything. Ties need not be required.  If casual is more comfortable, come casual.   If children want to bring special props and or that special toy or stuffed animal-bring them.  It will just make for a more relaxed atmosphere.

Planning is the Best Policy.
Please have your clothing grouped together by outfit and on hangers. Also, if you need to put on make-up or style your hair at the studio you will need to arrive early enough to be ready at your start time.

Resisting Change.
Babies and toddler really don’t like having their clothes changed. Changing clothing can sometimes quickly end a session, so we advise no more than two clothing options. We will always want to start with your favorite outfit first because…. well because you never know how long a Little One will last!

It’s A Slimmer You.
If you want to look slimmer, choose darker colors and longer sleeves.

Camera Glamor.
Makeup should be slightly heavier than normal. Also avoid makeup with an SPF in it. Although it is good for your skin in the sun, the SPF tends to create a shine. Summer shine can be controlled by using translucent powder that knocks out shine without adding additional color.

We Have Pets Too.
Pets are always welcome! However, they can also be distracting, diminishing the time we have to focus on your child. So, we suggest if you want portraits with your pets that you schedule specifically for pet portraits!

Family Style
Family portraits with a coordinated color scheme look best. Keep this in mind when you choose your wardrobe. You do not have to be totally matched, but colors should compliment each other.  (ie, earth tones)

Dressing Your Infant
For babies avoid clothing that is too big, because it tends to bunch and cover the baby’s features. For newborns to six months diaper or nude pictures are always a good choice.  However, some babies become very fussy when undressed so always have picture ready clothes.

What Colors
Usually, we recommend warm-toned clothing for your family portrait. We suggest navy blue, forest green, burgundy red, chocolate brown. Avoid mixing prints, bold stripes, plaids, and polka dots.  Choosing solid colors is usually best.  Simple styles will contribute to the timeless quality of the portrait.

Prime Time Pictures
Between six and seven months old is your prime picture taking time. Babies are more animated and can sit on their own, but cannot move out of frame. Remember to try schedule about three months in advance.
